Often the complaint will include the names John Doe and Jane Doe to protect the rights of the plaintiff.

The reason the names John Doe, Jane Doe, and ABC Corps are often cited as defendants in a civil case is to represent any unknown person or corporation that may be responsible for your injuries that are unknown to us at the time your complaint is filed but whose identities may be revealed to us during the course of the investigation/discovery. This is done solely to protect your rights.   An example of this would be if the defendant was claiming that a "phantom" car was also responsible for your injuries and same was noted on the police report but no contact info was given.  If during discovery we discover the identity of the driver of that "phantom" vehicle, we are able amend our complaint to include the person simply by substituting John Doe for the name of the driver of the "phantom" vehicle.
