Dangerous Route 78 to Face Months of Paving Work

Posted on Sep 07, 2012

Acting Executive Director Frank Tolotta termed the targeted stretch of highway "one of the busiest truck corridors in the United States."

Construction is planned to start next week on a 2.25-mile stretch of Route 78 west of the the Delaware River Toll Plaza. The eight-month project will have multiple lanes closed in each direction.

Planned 2013 Route 78 bridge painting projects, in Bloomsbury in Hunterdon County and Bedminster in Somerset County, will complicate things further for New Jersey motorists.

According to the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, which owns the highway segment, the construction is the first major refurbishing of the roadway since it first opened to traffic in November 1989. An equivalent stretch of commission-owned highway on the Jersey side was repaved three years ago, and the toll plaza was upgraded with Express E-ZPass two years ago.

The first lane closures are to begin next week, in both directions, weather permitting. Westbound lanes will be closed closest to the bridge, while eastbound lane closures will commence near the Morgan Hill Road exit.

The lane closures are expected to continue uninterrupted at least through May 15.
