The man "may have been getting into his car or was in the vicinity of his car" when he was struck by a passing motorist, Bayonne police Lt. Franco Amato said.
Amato said the 43-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The man's next-of-kin has not yet been notified, he said.
There are currently no reports of anyone else being injured as a result of the collision, which was reported to police at around 2:15 p.m., according to Amato.
No one has been arrested in connection to the incident at this time, he said.
Amato couldn't immediately say what kind of vehicle struck the 43-year-old.
A small truck and a car were involved in a crash at 32nd Street and Kennedy Boulevard, with both vehicles coming to a stop partially on the sidewalk. Police have not said what role either played, if any, in the fatal crash.
