A car driven by a 16-year-old boy slammed into the window of Adams Fine Clothing at 1275 Springfield Ave. in the shopping center this pas Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the driver was a Chatham resident who had a learner's permit. He "took his parents' car while they were out, apparently to get pizza around 1 p.m. on Sunday," said Deputy Chief Scott Torre.
The store's owner, Joe Savino said not only did the driver run the car into the window once, "he panicked and put the car into reverse, turned the wheel and took out part of the support column" outside the store. "Then he puts the car back in drive and must have stomped hard on the gas pedal, because the second time he hit the window he went in much more than the first time," Savino said.
Torre said, "As he pulled into the parking spot he accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the break and drove through the front window of Adams. He then backed up and struck a brick support column."
The driver was charged with taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, being an unlicensed driver, careless driving and violating his learner's permit. He has been scheduled for a municipal court appearance at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31.
