If you are driving a friend’s car and get in to an accident, are you covered? Typically, if you are driving your friend’s car with permission and you are involved in an accident that if your fault, then injuries you cause to others and damage caused to other people’s property will be covered up to the limits of liability your friend is insured for. If your friend did not elect collision coverage, then the damage to your friend’s car will not be covered. Also, keep in mind, if the injuries you cause have a monetary value greater than the insurance coverage on your friend’s car, you may personally be held liable for the difference. I am of the belief that if you are driving someone else’s car, make sure they have sufficient insurance coverage. Accidents happen, so it only makes sense you are protected.
